Test every planned mount contact point with a small household magnet. A magnetic mount needs clean, flat ferrous steel at every contact point. One successful test near the center of the roof does not prove that another panel, edge, raised rib or accessory cover uses the same material.
This check takes a few minutes and should happen before you order a magnetic Starlink Mini mount. It helps separate a suitable ferrous-steel location from aluminum, fiberglass, glass, composite panels and mixed-material roof assemblies.
What the magnet test can and cannot tell you
A magnet test answers one narrow question: does the exact contact point attract a magnet? Strong, repeatable attraction is evidence that the surface beneath that point contains a ferrous material.
The test does not prove:
- that the panel is flat enough for full contact;
- that the paint or coating is undamaged;
- that every planned mount point uses the same material;
- that the roof can carry a particular load;
- that a removable mount is suitable while the vehicle is moving;
- that a product fits every vehicle of the same make or model.
Use the result as the first compatibility gate, not as a complete installation approval.
What you need
- A small, clean household magnet
- A soft microfiber cloth
- Painter's tape or removable labels
- A flashlight for checking panel shape and surface condition
- The footprint or contact-point spacing of the mount you are considering
Avoid dragging a magnet across paint. Place and lift it vertically. If you are concerned about the finish, put a clean, thin protective layer between the test magnet and the surface, then confirm that attraction is still obvious.
Step 1: Identify the exact mounting area
Do not start with the vehicle badge or an online statement that a model has a steel roof. Start with the exact area where the mount will touch.
Mark the planned front, rear, left and right contact points. On a four-point platform such as the ST70 Magnetic Vehicle Mount, every contact point matters. A mixed result means the selected location is not verified for that footprint.
Keep the proposed placement away from sharp seams, deep channels, large curves, loose trim, roof glass, antennas and moving roof components. The mount needs the contact geometry specified on its product page.
Step 2: Clean and inspect the surface
Wipe away dust and grit before placing the test magnet. Dirt can make the test inconsistent and can damage the finish when pressure is applied.
Inspect each point for:
- strong curvature or a raised rib;
- dents, chips, cracks or peeling coating;
- plastic caps or trim that may hide the structural panel;
- roof film, wraps or accessories;
- seams between different panels;
- sunroof or panoramic glass boundaries.

Step 3: Test every planned contact point
Place the small magnet vertically on the first marked point, release light hand pressure and observe whether it remains attached. Repeat at every other planned point.
Use the same magnet and the same testing method for each location. If one point shows much weaker attraction, reposition the whole footprint and test again. Do not solve a weak or failed point by assuming the other magnets will compensate.
For a roof with stamped channels or ribs, test the actual surfaces the mount will contact. A magnet that sticks in a low channel does not verify a cup or foot that would land on the raised area beside it.
Step 4: Interpret the result

Step 5: Check flatness and full contact
A positive magnet test is not enough if the mounting feet cannot sit as intended. Compare the product footprint with the roof shape.
Look from the side and confirm that every planned point lands on a clean, stable area. Do not bridge a deep channel, panel step or accessory edge unless the product documentation specifically supports that geometry.
Do not add improvised spacers, extra magnets or unverified pads to make an incompatible footprint appear to fit. Those changes can alter contact, height, cable loading and the product's documented use boundary.
What if the roof is not magnetic?
You still have several routes, depending on the real contact surface and how the system will be used:

A magnetic fit check does not create moving-use approval. Driving adds vibration, impact, airflow, cable forces and changing surface conditions.
If an Outluma product page says parked or stationary use, remove or stow the system before the vehicle moves. Do not infer a road-speed or wind rating from a successful household-magnet test.

Is every steel-looking vehicle roof magnetic?
No. Paint color and appearance do not identify the panel material. Vehicles and RVs can combine steel, aluminum, fiberglass, composite parts and glass, so test the exact contact points.
Is one magnet test in the middle of the roof enough?
No. Test every point where the mount will touch. Adjacent panels, ribs, trim areas and roof accessories can use different materials or geometry.
Does a stronger magnet make an aluminum roof compatible?
No. Aluminum is not a ferrous magnetic landing. Choose an attachment route designed for a suitable glass surface, verified fixed structure or ground deployment instead.
Can I drive after the mount passes the test?
Not unless the specific product has separate documented moving-use approval. A material check verifies only the contact material, not road-speed, wind, vibration or load performance.
